Devil's Lake State Park, Wisconsin

September 18, 2024

After leaving St. Paul and the kids, we headed onward to an old favorite place of ours--Devil's Lake State Park near Baraboo, Wisconsin.

Worst photo ever of a state welcome sign

Quartzite campground at Devil's Lake

A very pleasant campsite that was surprisingly solar challenged due to very tall trees to the south of us

An added bonus for this location was our son Alan was coming to stay for a few days. Fortuitously, we had excellent weather the entire week (80s during the day, 60s at night and mostly sunny with no rain). The hill and tall trees behind our site cooled our back deck so that it was a very comfortable temperature the whole time.

Our stay consisted of lots of good hiking, a round of disc golf at a nearby 18-hole course, and lounging around playing games and talking. Since Alan expressed interest in experiencing the "retired lifestyle" of our cooking and everyday routine, we also threw in some of our typical recipes and the occasional oddball YouTube video to the mix.

The Tumbled Rocks Trail We walked this trail before Alan arrived

Look around at the lake and rock fall. Behind you and up to the left on a diagonal is where you can climb the boulders all the way to the top.

The West Bluff Trail Our first fall color of the year! 😁

Alan had climbed up the rocks from the Tumbled Rocks Trail to meet us up on the West Bluff Trail

Still a little bit of summer left!

We hiked the East Bluff Trail another day

The diagonal strip of boulders across the lake is what Alan climbed the previous day

It's a long way down!
