Halifax, Nova Scotia

July 1, 2024

We had a pretty easy drive, as our destination was only about an hour or so away. We got to appreciate the Nova Scotian countryside in the sunshine this time around, and it was quite a different experience from when we first entered the province in the fog and mist. Alas, it was the nicest weather we were to have during our stay in Halifax.

One of many pretty lakes along our route on this bright sunny day

We stayed at Shubie campground, located in an urban park within the Halifax metropolitan area. The campground was very RV-park-like and had the typical privacy and scenery you would expect from an RV park.

Our backyard with peak-a-boo views of...Ikea!

The sun became increasingly bashful as the day went on, and we didn't really see it much again until after we left. We explored the park trails on Saturday, as it was the only day without rain in the forecast.

They have the cutest little squirrels in the Maritime Provinces, and people here leave nuts and seeds for them all over the place

The park surrounds a portion of the historic Shubenacadie canal system

Nowadays, the only traffic through the canal are kayakers and the like

There was a very nice network of walking trails throughout the park

Lots of fragrant wild roses everywhere!🙂

Sunday was rainy, cold, and blustery--a good day to stay inside. And that is what we did. Monday was Canada Day, and despite the forecast for more rain, we packed up some umbrellas and caught a bus to a ferry to the waterfront of Halifax to check out the holiday festivities. Unfortunately, the holiday festivities (parade, military band concert, etc.) were cancelled due to the rain. So, we took advantage of the Canada Day free admission to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and visited there instead.

Not much of a view out the ferry window with the fog and rain

The maritime museum had lots of interesting ship models

After the museum, we walked around the waterfront for a while.

Not too many people out today

Not sure this picture is one to entice tourists, but it sure was realistic
