Suwannee River State Park, Florida

March 4, 2023

Back to our regularly scheduled program!

Our  first drive of the year to Suwannee River State Park in northern Florida was blissfully uneventful.  We made a quick stop shortly after "take off" so that Rick could check on the trailer bearings and all the hitch parts. (Since Rick had recently taken them all apart and put them back together, he was feeling a bit queasy about them.) No worries--everything seemed to still work fine.

Our stay at this park was just for two nights, so shortly after we arrived we got out and took a stroll around the park (only about 1.5 miles) and around the campground.

The dark water captured the reflections nicely, but the setting was a bit foreboding...

...what's lurking in that black lagoon?

An almost a perfect mirror of the sky

It felt good to be back in nature!

The next day (Thursday) we took a longer hike (3.5 miles), traveling farther up the river and back along some sort of smaller creek or bayou.

Way down upon the Swanee River ♪ Fun fact: Stephen Foster needed a 2-syllable southern river name for a song he was working on. He searched an atlas and settled on the Suwannee (even though it really has 3 syllables).

Look around - Along the Suwanee River

The smaller creek was very interesting with very dark water - Take a look around.

There were actual "bluffs" at this park--a rarity in Florida.

Look around this really nice bridge in a pretty location

Julie found some giant pinecones along the trail.

Almost as big as Texas!

On Friday we got up early to head off to our next stop in Mobile, Alabama.  We wanted to get an early start to miss at least some of the strong winds that were forecasted for the Florida panhandle that day. One doesn't think much about the wind when just driving a car, but towing a big tall box is another story!
