Trinidad Lake State Park, Colorado

May 20, 2026

What a difference a few days and a few hundred miles can make. We went from 100+ degree days and hiding out in air conditioning to lows in the lower 30's and running the heat. Julie always said she likes variety, and that is one thing guaranteed in this lifestyle!

In another installment of "It's Always Something", we started off our journey with the discovery of a screw nicely screwed into one of our trailer tires. Since we happened to be leaving on a Sunday, and the tire places were closed, we decided to drive on the spare tire until Monday. Not that we really had a choice in the matter.

Rick is getting really good at changing tires!

We stopped for the night in Dumas, Texas at a free city-run RV park. It was quiet, an easy-in-easy-out, and it got the job done. Plus, it had electric hookups to run our AC, as the temps were in the upper 90s when we arrived in the afternoon. At least we were back down to double digits.

The Texas Panhandle--the Nebraska of the South

After getting gas along the way, we couldn't help but notice this huge cowboy...

Turns out he has a name-- Tex Randall

The Texoma RV park was just a parking lot, but it served its purpose for the night.

Next door was a little park with a playground of good ole fashioned playground equipment.

Tall swings!

Next morning we got an early start to beat the high winds that were forecasted for the afternoon. The same desolate scenery was our lot until we moved on to some new states. Then, things started looking more interesting.

Still in Texas.

Oh, there's some topography ahead in the distance!

Snow-capped mountains barely visible at the horizon!

Our first Scenic Overlook sign in quite a while!

During the drive, we pulled in to a Walmart to see if they could repair our tire with the screw in it. They refused to touch it, on account of it being fairly worn and not having a super amount of remaining tread. We decided to take this opportunity just to get all the tires replaced. (We were planning on doing it sometime this year anyway--so this was as good a time as any.) Julie called ahead to a tire place in Trinidad, Colorado (or next destination) so they could order a set of tires in time before we moved on. Happily, they were able to order the tires, and we got scheduled for an early appointment a couple of days later (the day we were to move again).

We arrived at Trinidad Lake State park around noon--it helped that we gained an hour when passing into Mountain Time.

Our site overlooked Trinidad Lake, and we had a nice view of Fishers' Peak

A few steps behind our campsite

We only stayed three nights, and aside from the day of our arrival (which was gorgeous), the weather was cool and mostly cloudy and sometimes rainy. We took a pleasant hike off the campground that first afternoon to take advantage of the good weather while it lasted.

The Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the distance

The lake was such a pretty color!

We went into the historic town of Trinidad the next day to visit their history museum and pick up a few groceries.

The local liquor store (one of our stops) inhabited an old tire shop

The rest of the time was spent just hanging around the campsite--a pretty low-key blog post this time around!

The morning we left was just beautiful!
